Edward Ponniah Obituary - Markham, ON | Chapel Ridge Funeral Home (frontrunnerpro.com)
Dr. Philip Savundararaj!
20 December 2020.
We mourn the loss of Dr. Philip Savundararaj, the loving and devoted husband of Frances Noeline Indra (nee Thampoe) who passed away on Sunday, December 20, 2020 in Katy, Texas. Philip was the son of the late Sebastiampillai Joseph and Mary Rita Savundraraj, the brother of Noeline Vinothini of Switzerland, Edward Sasitharan of Canada and Andrew Ranjithan of Canada; and the son-in-law of Joseph Bonjean and Anna Lourdes Thampoe of Connecticut.
Philip was a gentleman to his fingertips who listened not to your words but to your hearts. Always loving, caring, attentive to others’ needs - sympathy and empathy were his sterling qualities. A highly educated and accomplished Research Scientist in the Oil and Gas Industry, Philip was unassuming in manner and endeared himself to everyone around him.
Born in Inuvil, Sri Lanka, Philip studied at the Little Flower Convent in Bandarawela, St. Michael’s College in Batticaloa and St. Peter’s College in Colombo before joining Royal College in Colombo where he sat for his GCE Ordinary and Advanced Level Exams. He earned a Bachelor of Science with distinction in Physics from the University of Jaffna and became an Assistant Lecturer of Physics at the same university. Philip was awarded a Graduate Fellowship at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he earned a Master of Science in Physics and a Ph.D. in Surface Physics. He joined Schlumberger-Houston Downhole Services as a Project Engineer in 1990 and was seconded as a Research Scientist in 1996 to Schlumberger Cambridge Research, Cambridge, UK.
Philip married Indra on December 29, 1996 in Stamford, Connectict and Indra then joined Philip in Cambridge. Philip moved back to Schlumberger Doll-Research in Ridgefield, Connectict in 1998 as a Senior Research Scientist and was employed there until 2004. During this period, Philip also went on a secondment to Schlumberger Technology Center in Abingdon, near Oxford, UK. In 2004, Philip joined Scicom International in Houston, Texas as a Senior Consultant and following corporate acquisitions continued working in that role at SAIC and Wipro Technologies. Philip suffered a stroke in 2012 and continued to work until 2016 when he went on Long Term Disability. Philip was an avid reader and passionate about Science, Technology and Chess.
Dear Philip, we loved you in life and miss you with our weeping hearts. May God in his mercy grant you eternal rest in his kingdom.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 28, 2020 at the Schmidt Funeral Home Grand Parkway Chapel, in Katy, where a rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at the St. Edith Stein Catholic Church, in Katy, with Rev. Ryszard Kulma, Celebrant.

Physical departure from our to enter into the cosmic world may be the most miserable episode for the nearest and dearest!
In actuality is the transition from the physical world to the spiritual world as well! The advantage is the departed souls can see us but we cannot see them! They don't need Puja's and memorial services but they want us to remember them and do some service to others!
Jega was a remarkable human being as he lived for others with his sense of hilarious humour, cheerfulness and laughter!
He took life as a joke! He never took life seriously! This because he had the scholarly knowledge of the world literature! He was also greatly influenced by the Greek philosophers, especially by Socrates! Further, he had a photographic memory to quote anyone in his extempore speeches!
Once in an engagement party in his speech, he said "Mother-in-law wants a handsome and wealthy son-in-law and the father-in-law wants an educated son-in-law! He was least worried about leaving our planet earth! Once he told me that he was overstaying on earth because he continued all my children are well settled and my mission on earth is accomplished and my living is also useless!
Although he said his living was useless he lived a useful life by giving free tuition to the poor children! I have seen few times that many parents with children knock at the gate and say! "We want to meet the teacher who gives free tuition in English! With a radiant smile, he would "I am the teacher bring your children I will teach them!" I saw him in action! He considered teaching as a hobby!
Once his past student sent his son to Jega for tuition in English! On the last day his son handed over an envelope with money but he returned half the money and told his son that he did not teach for money and did not deserve a large amount of money!
He was a born optimist and vanity, name, fame and glory never interested him! He used to say many wants to live on borrowed glory! Never seek recognition in life but one has to earn respect by his actions and by his words! He was also sensible to quote the correct quote at the right time! Here few of them! Necessity is the mother of invention! Fools rushing in where angels fear to tread! Don't be an open mouth idiot! Don't shine on borrowed feathers! Live for others!
The other day in conversation I quoted Socrates to an academic! She was so surprised but I said that I learnt about Socrates from my brother! For the last few months, I have been attending morning prayers with two Anglican vicars! I recite the prayer-like an actor in a poetical way remembering Brother Jega! He taught me to recite poems like an actor to remember them!
Here I express my admiration and appreciation for his greatness and simplicity as he gave me a tower of confidence and courage to confront life with a radiant smile! He left the earth with joy without any regrets! Remembering a human being after he had left the world is a glory and love to him! Perhaps Shakespeare's quote on Julius Caesar may be applicable to him! " I came! I saw!! and I conquered!!!"
Veni, vidi, vici( In Latin) May he enjoys his life with joy in the Cosmic World!

J. F. Jegarajasinham
My final tribute to my brother Jega with Joy and Sorrow!
Expression of gratitude for the members of my family!
Expression of gratitude for the members of my family!
In my stars, I am above thee, but be not afraid of greatness:
Some are born great,
Some achieve greatness,
Some have greatness thrust upon 'em.
William Shakespeare!
The above axiom was applicable to Jega! Because he was not afraid of greatness! In spite of his super intelligence, he led a simple with humility, hospitality and compassion! He was a fan of many writers including John Milton! He used to quote from Milton and he had forgotten! It was about the idiosyncrasy of foolish persons! With his photographic memory, he did forget that famous quote from Milton! I have to read Milton's work to find the axiom!
In his lifetime, he led a simple life as an ideal husband and devoted father! In his longevity, he was remarkable in his activities! Because his ambition was to become an electrical engineer! He studied science subjects but never studied any art subjects! But he developed a passion for English Literature, world literature and philosophy! He was multi-talented in many ways! In his lifetime, he was an actor, singer, teacher, writer, journalist, editor, orator, speech-writer, letter writer for literates and illiterates! Even educated persons used to go to him for application and letter writing! He was excellent as a teacher of English! He is no more let us think about the good time we had with him!
I saw the departure ceremony with emotion with tears! It was well organised and over 200 attended the departure ceremony to say goodbye to him! Closest relations were gracefully dressed in white sarees as a mark of respect to him. When the coffin was lowered I was in tears as well! as he became a part of the mother earth! Later on, I was talking to my nephews and they were all in a jolly good mood to share his jokes with each other! He led an excellent life and he left the earth with a radiant smile and jokes! For the last few days, I have been praising him and I will always honour him with joy!
Here I take this opportunity to express my gratitude and thankfulness to his wife Vimala, his children Maurice, Cassian, Nilani and Dilushine as well as their children! All of them looked after him with their unconditional love! Because ever since he became partially disabled he was full of frustration! Once upon a time he travelled far and wide in Sri Lanka to write about most of the cities further wined and dined with many dignitaries but the disability limited his movement!
His body was surrounded by the innumerable number of bouquets of flower! The countless number of his friends, relations and students paid tribute him over Facebook! His two grand-daughters paid an excellent tribute to him! Here I express my unconditional gratitude to all of them!
His wealth was his wisdom! He never lacked anything life because of his contentment ad satisfaction in life! He lived for everyone as his motto was " We must live for others!" Because of his motto in action, he left us in a jolly good mood with cheerfulness and humour! We will always miss him! He can see us but we can't see him!
May he enjoy life in the Cosmic world!

An appreciaton by Dr Chandrasekher's brother K Ramanathan PhD .
Dear Maurice,
At the very outset please accept my heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies on the passing away of your dear father, and my respected teacher, Mr. Jegarajasingham. Please do convey my condolences and sympathies to your family, brother Cassian, and sisters.
There are some people who are often thought of as immortal. Their presence, charisma, and the impact they make on one's life are so special that they become larger than life and it is difficult to accept that they are no more when they pass away. Sir, was one such individual to me. He taught me English and History in Grades 7 and 8. I loved his classes, especially his English classes. His ability to inspire and bring poetry to life often gave me goosebumps. When he recited Rudyard Kipling's poem 'If,' and as he thundered at the end saying,
"If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!"
I had goosebumps and shivered with emotion that I can still recall most vividly. When Sir recited the poem 'Lochinvar,' by Sir Walter Scott, and started off by saying,
"O young Lochinvar is come out of the west,
Through all the wide Border his steed was the best;
And save his good broadsword he weapons had none,
He rode all unarm’d, and he rode all alone.
So faithful in love, and so dauntless in war,
There never was a knight like the young Lochinvar."
all of use wanted to be as dashing and romantic as young Lochinvar.
Such was the magic he wove in class that all of us eagerly waited for his English classes. Sir would say. "What shall we do today?" and all of us would shout in unison, "Poetry!"
His History classes were no different in terms of arousing our interest. He would make us angry when he talked of the conquest of Ceylon by the Portuguese, Dutch, French, and the English. Our hearts would swell with pride when he talked of how brave hearts in the hinterland fought against the European invaders with nothing but agricultural implements and their bare hands. Sir had the ability to make us live and experience what he taught. A rare skill that sadly is missing today among most teachers. To Sir, teaching was service to God. To the uninitiated it was just a job. Sir used his classes to mould young minds and fill their hearts with noble thoughts and ethical conduct. Sometimes I think that people like Sir must be one of God's angels sent by the Almighty to guide the young. That angel has now returned happily to be by the side of God after having accomplished God's bidding. Does the angel realise that those he left behind are drowning in tears? I wonder. But, angels do no wrong. I comfort myself with the thought that God beckoned and the angel left.
As I reflect upon the passing away of Sir, I cannot help but feel a debt of gratitude to him for making me what I am today and showing me how a teacher should conduct himself. I try, like Sir, to enthuse my MBA and PhD students. I am getting there but will never be as good as Sir. Sir may no longer be with us physically but he will remain in my heart and thoughts until I too meet my Maker.
During these difficult days please remember that his countless students, including me, share your sorrow and are praying that Sir may rest in peace after fulfilling God's work in his unique way. Education is the greatest gift that one can impart to another and this is what Sir gave all of us - a gift that is more precious than anything else in this world. When I next visit Colombo, I will personally meet you to convey my sympathies. Please look after yourself during these difficult days.
Sir, also taught me the poem, "A Psalm of Life" written by H.W. Longfellow. The last three verses of this poem are:
"Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time;
Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o’er life’s solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.
Let us, then, be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait."
Sir has left behind footsteps on the sands of time for all of us to follow. The greatest tribute that I can pay to my beloved teacher and mentor is to make my life sublime, like his; live honestly and work hard with the thought that Sir, along with my dear father, and other respected teachers who are now with God will be watching over me and guiding me. Once again please accept my heartfelt condolences and sympathies.

Comment on the tribute to Jega!
Dear Linus
Thank you for sharing the great experience, and the tribute of a student to his great teacher Mr Jegarajasingham. Dr. K. Ramanathan was blessed by Almighty to have studied under such a great humanitarian scholar. While my eyes filled with tears my heart swelled with pride. There cannot be a better tribute to a teacher coming from an inspired student. Very rarely do we find teachers of such calibre who live in the hearts of their students and continue to enrich their lives throughout. This tribute by Dr K Ramanathan is one of the best of its kind. The poems quoted by him are my favourites too and the best motivational poems. From what you have expressed I can imagine the impact he would have made on the students. My million pranaams to such a wonderful teacher.
God has assigned him other duties- to delight the angels with his wit and humour.

An appreciation by Joe Bonjean Thampoe
It is with marked sense of sadness, heavy heart and remembrance that these words we pen. It is in the midst of life, we have deaths. Death is our inevitable destiny and it always will be. Nobody will remain evergreen or young in perpetuity. The Bible's observation is true;
'What is your Life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.' James 4:14. Yes, Lord You gave our Cousin Jega, a long life, chalking up to 90 plus years - a month shy of 91, but for last few years, he was bedridden, due to minor stroke. When anyone visited him, he used to chuckle and crack jokes, by making all around him and visitors smile. A very jubilant and jovial person he was in good health and sickness. An American William Arthur Ward, in one of his books, has written thus:- I quote, " The mediocre Teacher, Tells. The good Teacher explains. The Superior Teacher, Demonstrate. The Good Teacher, Inspires." Our Cousin Jega, was at St. Benedict's College, Kotahena, was there for 33 long years, as a Senior English Teacher, well respected Teacher and taught English with grammar and had flawless command of English. He taught Maths, Science, Art subjects as well. He was the admiration of everyone, who came to know him. He was more than a Father, than a Teacher. He encouraged his students, the importance of gaining knowledge through reading and requested them to ' Read a book a week' He inspired his students and in his Class, he used to tell the story from 'Casablanca' " The boy stood on the burning deck, whence all but he had fled...." or recite the First stanza from a Christian Poem that said, " Drive the nail aright boys, hit it on the head, strike with all might boys, while the iron is red." Then he tells the Shakespearean stories etc., such instruction helped the Students, master the 'Queen's English.' He motivated the students to achieve superior results. He was also a strict disciplinarian but earned the warmth affection and loyalty of his students, as they sense a genuine concern and interest in their welfare, A refined gracious perfect Gentleman unfailingly polite, simple, humble and always avoided hurting people and his loving care had no bounds, He was a Joyous and loyal Teacher, his journalistic skills had no bounds. He was a Talented journalist, a prolific writer, and written hundreds of articles, stories, to all the Sri Lankan papers. He edited few monthly magazines, 'In Touch' Tapbrobane, Saint Anthony News Letter, etc. He is the founder Secretary of PPA of St. Anthony College, Past President of St. Anthony Church Community Welfare Society in Colombo Branch. Yes, You have fought a good fight. You have finished the race. You have kept your Faith, Your goal is won, Eternal Bliss is your Reward. We are not all sad. Though you are dead you are not truly apart. For as long as Love and memory lives. You are right there in our Hearts. "Well Done, my good faithful Servant, your Mission is accomplished. Now it is time to Come Home and Rest in a Room already prepared for You. Good Bye, 0ur dear Cousin Jega. We Love You and miss You. The void and the vacuum You have left our lives, will never, ever be filled. But yet your legacy will go on, until, we meet on that beautiful shore one day.
Prayer: Lord grant that we may hold dear the memory of your Servant, never bitter for what we have lost nor in regret of the past, but always in hope of the Eternal Kingdom where, You will bring us together again. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord . Amen.
Sorrowfully,
Mr & Mrs. J.Bonjean Thampoe

Tribute from Linus Aloysius
This morning when I was informed by email about the departure of my brother Jega from our planet earth it was a shock for me! Departure from our earth is the only certainty in life! As George Bernard Shaw wrote two things we cannot escape from life death and tax! I quote Shaw as my brother was an admirer of him!
He was an excellent teacher and he knew the art of teaching! Moreover, he was also a journalist! He was a self-made human being and he was blessed with the rarest human qualities of grace, gift and virtue! He was never greedy but he was always helpful to everyone! He had a magnificent sense of humour! He knew that art of conversation! He considered commitment and devotion to the family as an excellent sacrifice! He lived for his wife and children! He was offered an opportunity to study in the United States but he refused to go because he considered family life as living and growing with the family! He did not accept the offer! He never travelled beyond Sri Lanka! He was the master of the English language! He was one of the rarest few who had the excellent command and knowledge of the English language in Sri Lanka! He was my mentor and he was addicted to English Literature! He used to buy the books and read them and on the back of the page, he used to write his commentaries of the books! I used to read his books and that was how I gained a good knowledge of English and communication with everyone around the world! Once he said, "My purse may be empty but my mind will never be bankrupt of ideas!" As a retired teacher, he used to give tuition to poor students! Once his wealthy student who worked for the United Nations sent his son to him for tuition and on the last day, the student gave him the tuition fee but he returned half of the fee and told him that he did not deserve the large sum of money for tuition! His life was full of humor and he was always cheerful in life! He was a daredevil! to confront any barriers and obstacles in life with a radiant smile!
Once he said! All my children are settled and I am ready to leave the earth at any time! Another time he said, "I am exceeded time on earth!" His departure from our earth reminds me of a poem! "Let me go but miss me!" Last time I met him was over 15 years ago! His humor and jokes will always keep my spirit of life alive with love to him! Some of his friends say that I talk exactly like him with humor!
Since 1982, I met him few times! We did have an enjoyable company with each other! He always described me as a human being of contradiction! He was familiar with innumerable authors of the English Literature familiar with the literary giants of the world literature and philosophers! He had the gift of quoting from the intellectual giants of the world of wisdom! He was a real and true human being of compassion and forgiveness! He will live in my heart forever not because he was my brother but because he was a magnificent human being! I type this tribute with grief because I lost him! With joy because he lived up to a ripe age and enlightened innumerable human beings with his life! May he rest in peace and alive in inspiration with us forever!
With blessings and prayer!

Will miss coming home to this cheerful face.
He had a great sense of humor - instant jokes at any time for everyone, even in serious moments. I’ve never seen him get stressed or upset, instead he’d joke about it and make everything look so simple.
We used to call him “the walking dictionary”. He was a knowledgeable man- A scholar, journalist, teacher and to us a loving grandfather- always encouraging us to learn from him, asking us to spot mistakes on newspapers articles and correcting our grammar. We loved watching “My fair lady” with him, he knew the script by heart. Reminds me of him say “Look at her! a prisoner of the gutter, condemned by every syllable she ever uttered”
An adventurous traveller who used to visit different parts of Sri lanka every weekend and write to magazines and newspapers about his experiences. He’d always ask us if we’ve visited places and had a different story to share from all parts of the island.
Will miss our lead singer and conductor at every birthday party, will miss watching him steal food that he is not allowed to eat from the kitchen, our pretend interviews of his life story and most of all annoying him and being called an idiot on a daily basis.
Thank you for all the memories Big dada! Still feels like you’re here in Kotahena with us! May your soul rest in peace❤️

You taught us to be brave, dream big, laugh when life gets hard, give without holding back, serve others wholeheartedly and to love big. There are countless fond memories that you have left with us - from buying us chocolates if we finished our lunch after school, holding our hand and helping to cross the road and staying with us until the school van came to pick us up every morning. You used to sing a kids’ praise song ‘make me a servant’ with your cute smile and head nodding while you sang. You sat all your grandchildren down around the TV on a regular basis to watch your all-time favourite classic movies with including ‘Oliver twist’, ‘Sound of Music’ and 'My Fair Lady’. We were all at some point your partner in crime at every family gathering when you wanted us to help you steal cutlets from the kitchen or anything edible for that matter.
Your are a true legend , admired by many. Thank You for all the sacrifices you have made for us, for making us laugh every time we hung out with you, for being the cutest, funniest, most cheerful, loving and caring Grandfather to us. We will always cherish every precious moment we shared with you. You are and forever will be loved by us and will be a part of us always. May your soul rest In Christ.
We love you BigDadda!

My Hero Jega!
J. F. Jegarajasingham being honoured as the president of Kayts St. Anthony's college OBA, South Ceylon Branch.
This is the most lively photo of Jega! He was honoured on the Vedic style and he was responding to the person who decorated him with the traditional Vedic manner! He looks radiant with a devotional smile like a hermit! He was, of course, a composite mixture of talents! His joy in this photo was reflected in his bright and radiant face! He was a daredevil and his mission in life was to console and comfort everyone! In his lifetime he carried out the mission of life with absolute contentment and expressible satisfaction! Sometimes he used to describe himself as the champion of lost causes! But he was victorious and triumphant in his life! He considered every person as a noble human but he considered human beings as the creatures of circumstance! Jega was famous for his hilarious cheerful, humour and wit! He was always observant! He always related stories with a radiant smile!
Because the Facebook he had worldwide publicity of his departure from our earth! He was never worried about his name fame nor popularity or wealth! I hope to write more about him before my memory fades away!
Bonjean's tribute was highly appreciated and praised by many because at his age 90plus his memory was brilliant and he wrote in a unique style! He might have been Jeaga's class mate! His granddaughters' appreciation was also highly appreciated by many friends! Because whatever they wrote came from their heart like the spring of the inspiration! He was of course attached to all his grandchildren! I am proud of them!
My friend a Professor of English highly commented about Bonjean, Amanda and Natasha for their presentation of the tributes to Jega!
Jega gives me the inspiration to write about him! Hence I wrote this mini-essay!

Let us remember our departed souls for ever and ever!
That is our gratitude to them!
All the Christian churches devote the month of November for the departed souls! First of November is devoted to the All Saints! Even the departed souls are Saints as they cannot commit any injustice! Let us remember them always as they are within us in spirit! By remembering them we are glorifying our God! In remembering them we are expressing our gratitude to them as our physical asset of the past and inspirational and spiritual treasure of our heart!
In my vocabulary, there is no sin exists but injustice exists due to the idiosyncrasies of the insensible mentally of the inhuman mind!
In my travel at home and abroad I used to mix with all nationalities who belong to various creeds and belong to various religious priests or hermits or sages! I do have frank and outspoken conversations and discussions with them without fear and with an open mind!
In my family I lost my father when I was seven! I lost mother when over fifty-five years ago! I lost my second brother in 1982! I lost my eldest brother in 1992 I lost my wife in 1993! I lost my fourth brother few years ago!
I always think of them and other friends and relations who enlightened my life with gratitude and thankfulness!
The inspiration they imparted upon me will always shine in my heart as the bright and radiant light of life!
When my second brother Richard passed away, all the brothers including my cousin brother and many of our relations were surrounded by him! He peacefully passed from our earth with a smile! He was a cheerful and innocent human being who lived a smile life! His wish was to see me before away! I accomplished request! He also lived for others in his humble and simple way!
During that time I flew to Hong Kong for a weekend! In spite of the uncertainty of his life on earth, he requested me to
bring some cigarettes and a shirt or two give to his friends! I did fulfil his requests and he was joyous! That was his greatness and magnanimity towards others!
I was joyous that I saw him alive for a few days!
Let us remember our departed souls forever and ever to glorify them every day in our daily prayers! They can see us in spirit but we cannot see them!

I remember my family who were departed from our earth!
Also the other members of our community on all souls Day!
The pictures of Kayts Cemetery taken in 2010
In my youthful days, the all souls days were celebrated uniquely in our village, Kayts! On the eve of All Souls Day, we the teenagers visit all the churches and the cemetery in procession! It was of course after dark! Later we visit the houses to remove the gates and the kitchens to remove the pots and pans! Leave them in some hidden places as the souls have removed the houses! Next day it was the crisis for house owners to go in search of their belongings! It was the custom in the good old days! In those days most of the persons were frightened to go near the cemetery at night as they were afraid of the ghosts! It was of course the foolish belief! In those days quite a lot of superstitions existed! Now of course Kayts is a deserted village!
We created our website as a historical website for our future generation! Our community consisted about fifty families but the members of the community were employed in various professions! I am trying to recollect the heroes and heroines from my memory! Now our members of the community are living in many parts of the world! Our website may help them to understand our community!
Originally our members of the community were farmers, then they became seafarers! Now our members in various other professions as doctors, lawyers, accountants, teachers! civil engineers, businessmen, academics, chefs and many other professions! We should be proud of them as our community had made tremendous progress!
I commence with my family! I am the grandson of Kaithanthamby! He was a landed gentry and he was a prominent citizen of our community and was also a member of the jury team! He left the earth before my birth! I know my grandmother Annaikimuthu. She was a beauty calm and cool lady! She walked to the hospital and on the next day she passed away!
My mother passed away when I was in Ghent, Belgium in 1953! The day she passed away I was walking along the street full of funeral undertakers! I was also restless! When I arrived in Glasgow, I received an airletter from my eldest brother that my mother passed away on the 3rd of March! My father passed away when I was six-year-old! He was a bosun and worked for the Port of Colombo! My mother’s name Muthammah and my father’s name was Rasiah!
Again in 1982, when I was getting ready to go to the city from home, I received an airmail stating about my Brother Richard and his days were numbered! I was in tears and I booked a telephone call to speak to my brother Jega! In those days there was no telephone system as it is now! There was radio telephone and the phone call had to be booked! He was joyous to hear my voice and told his friends that I had a commanding voice! I talked to him after twenty-two years! When I told him that I would visit Colombo to meet Brother Richard he was joyous! Brother Jega never thought that I would visit Colombo! Blood is thicker than water! When I heard about the health condition, I was shattered as he was only just over 60! He used to boast himself as the healthiest person but he became a victim of cancer! I was also emotional! The family attachment is always emotional! When he passed away he was surrounded by his brothers and relations including our cousin brother Anthonipillai! He left the earth with a radiant smile because he was surrounded by all his brothers and relations including me! So sad to seeing passing away from us but so glad he led a contented and satisfied life! Hence, he left the planet earth peacefully! I don’t think I will ever see anyone passing the planet earth like him!
During that time I visited Kayts with my eldest brother Xavier! We travelled by coach and it was a memorable journey! My main aim was to meet my Aunt Ponnamammah! When I saw her she was lean and feeble both of us cried! Even as I type this article I cried! Thinking of intimately attached relations always bring me tears to my eyes! It is natural and that is love! I am of course an emotional human being as I am sensitive to the human relationship! She also passed away! I spent three days in Kayts and it was a memorable stay as well! After all it was the village of my birth! I will never forget my motherland! East or West, Home is the best! I cannot forget my mother’s golden words, in one’s country that person is a swan and in another country, that person is a crow! It is quite true! We were well looked after by my Godmother and visited few places and met few of our relations as well as my teachers!
Selvathurai was another uncle of mine! He was educated in St. Patrick’s College! During his time it was the college of the elites! He was brilliant and clever! He worked for the Survey Department! At that time he was a teetotaller! He could not stand the mosquitos, hence he retired at the age of 30! He must have been the youngest person in the history of Ceylon to retire at that early age! Later years he regretted for his early retirement! In one occasion he said, if he had taken up to drinking arrack would have retired as the Surveyor General! He was a hilarious human being with his cheerful humour!
My eldest brother passed away in Chennai in 1994 and his wife Helen passed away in 2010! My other brother Alfred passed away few years ago! My cousin brother Anthinipillai passed away over ten years ago. He was the O. A. of Planning Ministry of Sri Lanka. My wife Chitra passed away in 2002 The recent departures from us are! Let us remember them with gratitude They were unique human beings who enriched our life! I know most of them and they were very helpful to me! I remember them with gratitude and thankfulness!
When I was in Kayts, I was an altar boy! If I got late Thandal Nachestram will come to our house to call me! My mother also used to spread water over my face to wake me up!
These are my joyous reminisces!

An appreciation of my late Bro. Nicholas Melizan Thampoe
By Bonjean Thampoe
“If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord." Romans 14:8.
For each and every person, in this world, through all trials and uncertinities, there is one thing, we can all be certain about: We will die. Death is inevitable and unpredictable and one never knows. when death would strike and our loving God can call us to Himself at anytime, without regard to persons age or importance. Human destiny. as given in Hebrews 9:27, read thus, "It is appointed that Human beings die once, and after this the Judgment."
My late beloved Brother Melizan, is the second in our family of four Sons and my late Father named each one of us, by giving the names of the Bishops, who governed the Diocese of Jaffna, i.e. Bonjean, Melizan, Julain and Brault. All three of my younger Brothers, predeceased me. My late Brother lived a very healthy life till mid-eighties and he fell sick in the middle of this year 2018. Having heard of the seriousness of illness, we combined a visit to celebrate my BIL Bishop Rt, Revd. Dr. Thomas Savundranayagam's milestone 80th birthday on July 13th 2018. We returned to USA in August and he was convalescing. On October 16th, we got the sad news of passing away peacefully and October 18th, his mortal remains in a beautiful casket, was taken for funeral service, conducted by the Parish Priest of St. Lucia's Cathedral. My Bother had a Grand Farewell, of almost all our Community members, relatives, Staff from Brooke Bonds, friends, and others, and the casket was taken for internment, at the Catholic section of the General cemetery, Kananatta, Borella.
My late Bro. Melizan a humble, simple, hardworking, honest, thoughtful, helpful and a giving person and each month he will bring home the finest Tea, he gets from Brooke Bonds. He was a devoted Husband and never failed to fulfill his duties as a caring Husband, Father, FIL, and Grand PA. He was married to Delphia for Golden years and blessed with 3 Sons, Messrs. Dileepkumar, Jeyakumar, and Merinkumar. FIL of Maureen, Sri Pratha, and Malar .Grandchildren Damian, Stephanie, Brittany, Debora, and Sessanie.
A Prayer;- O' Almighty and merciful Lord, it is just 2 weeks. since you left us. leaving behind precious and beautiful memories of your life with us, as a devoted Husband, loving Father, Brother, FIL, and Grand Father, which will remain with us, forever. Amen.
November is a month, where many Catholics think about the death and visit the cemeteries. Yes, memories of loved ones, gone before the special month, November restores. November 2nd is 'All Souls Day.' Let us all remember in gratitude, our Community members, who have gone before us. They all touched our lives. Beloved Parents, Family members, Relatives, Grand Parents, Teachers, Friends, trusted mentors, and others. Can be consoling especially, if that person has led a rich and full life. I like to quote the words of St. Chrysostom:-
" Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and offer our prayers to them." I just added this note, because as this month November is solely devoted for ' Remembering the Death. So, during this month, let us take a deepest look, into our whole perceptive of death and understand it in Christian sense.

Naval Honour to Joseph Anthonypillai Robinson
Tribute to Robinson
The greatest tribute we can offer to a departed soul is to honour him or her on her burial! In death, there is no nationality exists but a human being has left our planet earth! To honour that person with a respectful burial is the greatest honour we can offer to that departed soul!
Our Robinson was buried with a Royal Naval honour! The burial service was a colourful ceremony!
The sailors of the Royal Navy honoured him! He was honoured as his fellow sailor and human being!
Most of the sailors must have been Sinhalese!
Here the spirit of affection and respect was expressed in action!
These photos show the glory in sorrow!
The way he was honoured was a joy for the East Street Community!
The departure of our member of our community is a tragedy for us!
May he rest in peace!
Our sympathy to the members of his family!

George Francis
Remembering my beloved uncle George on his first month death anniversary! It was a shocking tragedy, no one expected that you will leave us so soon and we will have to bury you two days before your daughter's wedding you also being the youngest in your family. Remembering your child like nature how you made all of us laugh by cracking a joke or two and how much it made you happy seeing us laughing or once in a while seeing us in person or skype. Our childhood was full of fond memories of you which will be treasured in our heats for ever! Once again reminding all of us life is too short enjoy and appreciate every moment with all our loved ones without having to regret. Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord. May perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul Rest in Peace! Amen!
